Eye Care Myths

What is your level of familiarity to your own eyes? Do you have the knowledge to distinguish between reality and fiction? Here the common myths that you probably heard

Myth 1. Eating carrots will improve your vision.
Vitamin A (including carrots) is required for good vision. Yet, carrots are not the only source of vitamin A. A regular, well-balanced diet, including or without carrots, should offer enough levels of this vitamin.

Myth 2. Sitting too near to the TV can harm your eyes.

Though sitting too close to the TV may trigger eyestrain or a headache, it does not harm children's or adults' vision. However, constantly sitting close to the TV may indicate that the individual is nearsighted and, as a result, requires glasses. Children have a greater ability to focus on surrounding objects, thus they may find it more convenient to sit close to the TV.

Myth 3. Swimming with soft contact lenses is safe.
Swimming with contact lenses in is intriguing, but it is not worth the danger. If you open your eyes underwater while using soft contact lenses, you might get a highly dangerous infection.

Myth 4. Look directly at the sun can cause eye injury.

Looking directly into the sun is really not a great idea. UV exposure may cause blindness and has been related to eye illnesses such as corneal dystrophy, macular degeneration, and also solar retinitis. Sunglasses and custom filters are not suitable to see the sun. The only safe method to stare at the sun directly is with special-purpose solar filters.

Myth 5. Eye transplants are possible.

It's not really possible to transplant the eye because eyes are  linked to the brain by the optic nerve, which cannot be repaired once cut. The cornea, or transparent front section of the eye, is transplantable. Plastic intraocular lens implants (IOLs) are frequently used by surgeons to replace natural lenses lost during cataract surgery.

Don't be misled by eye care misconceptions. Keep up to date on your eyesight and ask your optometrist any questions you may well have.
