Cataract: Causes and Symptoms

A cataract is a clouding of your eye's generally clear lens. Seeing through clouded lenses is similar to seeing through a frosty or fogged-up window for those who have cataracts. Cataracts can cause clouded vision, making it hard to read, drive a car (particularly at night), or see the expression on a someone's face.

Cataracts may be developed if you are above the age of 60 and your eyesight has become cloudy or blurry. It's a frequent disease in elderly people that may be cured by your eye doctor.

If you do any of the following, you are more prone to get cataracts:

  • Live in an area with high levels of air pollution
  • Have a history of cataracts in your family
  • Drink a lot of alcohol
  • Smoking

Cause of cataract

The lens of your eye is mostly composed of water and proteins. Proteins linger in your eye as they degrade over time. These remaining proteins can cloud your lens, making it difficult to see properly. This is a normal if irritating because it is a part of the ageing process.

Cataracts are caused by a variety of factors. These are some examples:

  • Smoking
  • Some illnesses (e.g., diabetes)
  • Radiation treatment
  • An excess of oxidants (oxygen molecules that have been chemically changed as a result of regular daily life)
  • UV radiation
  • The use of steroids and other medicines on a long-term basis
  • Trauma

Cataract symptom

Cataracts generally develop over time. You may be unaware of their presence until they begin to obstruct light. Cataract symptoms and signs include:

  • Color fading or yellowing
  • A better light is required for reading and other tasks
  • Sensitive to light and glare
  • Have a double vision in one eye
  • Vision that is clouded, hazy, or blurry
  • Increasing night time vision difficulties
  • Seeing "halo" effects around lights
  • Prescription modifications for eyeglasses or contact lenses on a regular basis

Early diagnosis is critical. If there is an issue, the doctor may advise you to an eye doctor. Make an appointment with a pediatric eye doctor if you suspect something is amiss with your eyesight, even if nothing is revealed by the vision test.
